Great News Everyone!

I have discovered (once again) that I am a dumbass. Due to a small formatting error in the Categories links on the right it has not been possible to access old posts without going through hoops that I have not bothered to figure out, much less document.

It's fixed now - bathe in the gloom of my old posts.

In the future is something like this is not working, and you are getting 404 or 403 errors (anything with GIR on it), say something, god dammit. I don't actually READ this site, so I am not going to notice it and fix it if you don't.

Depressed Comment Spam

"I just don't have anything to say , but shrug. So it goes. Not much on my mind recently. I can't be bothered with anything recently."

"I feel like an empty room, but eh. Nothing seems worth doing. I haven't gotten much done today."

"I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen, but I don't care. Basically nothing seems worth thinking about. I can't be bothered with anything recently."

"My life's been pretty dull recently. Shrug. My mind is like a void. I haven't gotten anything done lately. I can't be bothered with anything recently."

These seem like exactly the sorts of comments that you might expect to be left on a weblog as bleak and depressing as mine, and you would be right, up to a point. Each of these otherwise perfectly valid comments on the uselessness of striving for anything is accompanied by a url that offers discount pills or the opportuniy to see Avril Lavaigne, apparently with less clothing than she normally might wear.

What I want to know is whether or not all blogs are getting hit with these things these days, or is it just blogs like mine that chart boring, depressing lives of quite desperation?

Flickr

So, I have finally gotten around to putting a bunch of pictures up onto Flicker. The irritating, but space effiicent mosaic thingee to the right will take you there, where you can view my hawesome pictures.

Okay, so most the pictures are not that great, but the comments on them are pretty amusing; plus, there is the exciting "Tipsy Teen" series!

Minor Site Re-Org

Today I went through and made some minor changes to the categories. It should still be easy to find everything.

I've taken all of the media related stuff, books, movies, television, and shoved it into it's own categoriy and set of sub-categories. More to the point, I have taken all of the personal life related stuff and shoveled it into a brand new category "Personal Blahgging", with a could of categories under than. This was brought on by a recent spat of posts that were not that personal, and the personal stuff was clogging up the General category. So now peronal life stuff has it's own category, and general is just for stuff that doesn't fit any existing category.

I shoulda been a librarian.

Sunshine, Joy and Updates

Well the sun has begun to shine in Colorado Springs and I think I am finally coming out of my winter shell. Maybe. We'll see.

At the very least, I plan to post more frequently about stupid things that no one cares about. Watch for upcoming posts on things like the PVR (Personal Video Recorder) that I built from parts, and my thoughts on the idea that I need to simplify my life and get rid of "stuff". The excitement it well nay unbearable.

More Quake Air Checks

Just a little note to let people know that I have posted another 2 hours or so of Quake Air Checks. They include an hour by Mister Koste and an hour of Midnight Dred by Doug Wendt.

I've also got another 2 hours of Mister Koste's show coming soon, as well as 5 Milo Mixes - all courtesy of Mike Koste. Thanks Mike!

I Am So Frickin' Awesome

Alrighty - everything seems to be working now. I have the whole site under Movabletype's control, but I have set it up so that everything is generating as a PHP file now. I also created a new index template that generates just the code fragemetn needed for the sidebar. The templates for all of the other pages now have a php include statement that pulls in the code fragment for the sidebar - voila - the sidebar is now always up to date on all pages without having to rebuild the site.

Now, I know that most people who will ever read this could not care less about the intracies of how this site works, but for the one person that does a Google search trying to figure out how to do what I am doing, this will be very useful.

Now I think I can pretty easily put together an Amazon Assistant template that will auto generate all of the CD Collection pages, which will not actually be under movable types control, but will still look like they are - they will use the same stylesheet, and they will pull the sidebar info from the code fragment generated by Movabletype.

Considering that I have no idea what I am doing, I am pretty frickin' impressed by me.

Site Revamp Continues

The update of the site continues...

I have updated all the templates and stylesheets so everything is now back to the colors you know and love.

I have also put all of the pages under the control of Movable Type, not just the blog pages. You can see this is you go to, oh say, www.edgore.com/quake. I know that a lot of people who use Movable Type are interested in doing this, if you want to know how I did it, leave a comment asking.

The next big thing is to redo the the CD pages, whcih are all screwed up right now. The main problem is that there are just so many of them - somewhere in the neighborhood of 200. I'm trying to figure out some way that I can use Movable Type to automatically generate the sidebar information, but use the Amazon Assistant program that I wrote to generate the pages and include the sidebar that AA generates. I think it's doable, I just need some spare time to sit and think about it. Current thinking right now is to set them all up as shtml files and do an include on a MT geenrated html fragment that does the sidebar stuff.

Anyone played with doing something like that?

Of course, I could just brute force the whole thing and sit and copy and past stuff into movable type for a day or so, but that seems to boring even for me.

We've moved

So, as you may have noticed Edwin Gore's Dopey Homepage has moved, and is now located here, at http://www.edgore.com.

Hopefully people will be able to follow the move over to here - Everything except the main directory at shinra.com forwards to here, so all of the rest of the content at shinra.com still survives, though the templating is all screwed up, and it's unreadable. Gotta fix that.

I'm still debating whether or not I should put a link from the new shinra.com homepage to here, but I don't want to mess with the cult pages very much.

We shall see.

MT-Blacklist

I installed MT-Blacklist today, since I have been having some problems lately with spam-comments - I've only received a dozen or so over the last couple of weeks, but they irritate me.

Just to make it very, very clear - this site has a very strict advertising policy. There are two levels of advertising allowed. If I seek your company out and WANT your advertising on my site, then we can work out an individual deal.

If you decide to post comment spam that directs visitors to commercial sites that are not related to the post you are commenting on (my call) there is a $500 fee which will allow your message to remain up for between 1 and 24 hours, basically till I notice it and delete. By posting comment-spam you are agreeing to these terms. I will send you a bill. Got that?

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing

On this site I have a "shrine" to the radio station I used to work at back in the 80s - you may have noticed it. Inside that shrine there was a cheesy little Matt's board message board which allowed people (like...5 of them) to discuss the station and there memories.

Recently the board got spammed a couple of times, and well, the admin tools for Matt's board suck. So, in irritation, I decided to go for something better.

I installed phpboard, which is terrifyingly powerful. It's, like, a real message board system - better than Yahoo's crummy groups software in fact. It only took about 20 minutes to install too, which surprised me, since I am terrible at doing server-side stuff.

So that's all. No real point, except that I now have superpowerful mesage board software in place for like 5 people who post maybe once a month, tops.

Take that Bandwidth Thieves!

It's amazing. Once you put up a large number of images people think they can just start linking directly to them to use them on their websites. So there are people out there who's avatars on message boards are an album cover they found on my site, or an entry in their blog has an album cover, or, in one case they are using it as the background for their guestbook.

Now understand, I have no problem with people stealing pictures from my site. Most of them I don't own anyway. What I have a problem with is people linking to an image from my site out of context, just so they don't have to host it themselves.

So, as of today, you can't do that anymore - if you try to you will just get a blank image. If you want to link to an image on my site, and it's because you are actually discussing something on my site and providing a link back to my site, get in touch. I would happy to let you use it.

Look at me! I'm part of a journalistic trend!

In a show of solidarity with fellow journalists Jayson Blair, and Stephen Glass, I have decided to come clean about the errors and fabrications that I have allowed to seep into the sacred news source that is edgore.com, depended on every day by ones upon ones of readers...

Saturday I reported that Moonpools and Caterpillars had put out only a single CD. I admit now that was a lie. They had two...in addition to Lucky Dumpling.

I actually even knew about one of them.

Why did I decide to withhold that information? Well...it was because the facts didn't fit the story I so desperately wanted to tell - a story that is, if you think about it, truer than the truth.

I wanted to tell the story of a tiny band, who hit it big in one album, then vanished into obscurity, only to later be searched on by bored people with empty lives, desperately looking for something to fill them.

No, I knew that the band had a first album - "The Pink Album", but it's hard to find, and I have never heard it. They also had a third album, "12 Songs" but I didn't bother to do any research, and frankly, still haven't.

So...why did I do it? Why did I take advantage of my readers, my site visitors, and Moonpools and Caterpillars themselves to create this tower of lies that has now had it's foundations sapped out by the tireless efforts of a single reader who would not give up on the truth?

Well, duh, because nobody actually reads this blog. Don't kid yourself.

Of course, even the person who pointed out they had more than one album thought they only had two, so nobody is perfect.

And I think that there is the lesson here - a lesson that we could all learn from, especially when we look at people like Jayson Blair, who made up stuff, and is now trying to get a big book deal, or Stephan Glass, who made up stuff, and actually DID get a mediocre book deal.

That lesson is this - Make stuff up. Nobody is really paying any attention anyway, and you might be a big book deal out of it.

It is done...Mostly

At long last - I have finished updating the CD collection. Pretty much. All the CDs are these, and the existing comments are there. I still need to go through and write many, many comments, but I figure if I do a couple a day for about 6 months then eventually...

I have also decided that I am going to clean up the program that I used to create the pages and release it for others to use. It's basically a simple database and an engine for generating the HTML pages from templates.

This one is for you Mikey.

I know there's a war going on...

But I just finished writing the software do-hickey that will automatically create pages for my CD collection! Needless to say I am psyched. As soon as I take care of a database issue or two the whole thing will go up.

Hooray!

Now back to your regularly scheduled bleakness.

That's Weird

So, for ages I have owned several domain names - generally purchased during drunken evenings of brainstorming domain names that got out of hand. Some of them a pretty cool, like piratetwins.com or frootbat.com and frootbetty.com. Others are boring and utilitarian - purchased just so that I will have them when needed - like edgore.com.

Recently, Verio, my hosting company, made it possible to point parked domains at an IP address for free (as opposed to the old $9 a month). So, I promptly pointed my addresses at shinra.com, effective like, last Sunday.

Looking at my access log today, some guy in Huston has gone to www.edgore.com, and is using WGET to download the entire site to his local drive.

Why would anyone do this?

Update-O-Rama!!!!!

I'm so excited. I've just switched this page over to Movable Type, which should give me a lot more flexibility in updating it, and getting feedback.

CD Collection

Well, actual updates are now occuring in the CD Collection section! I have just finished putting up the new improved A - C section. While this may not sound very impressive at first, you need to understand that I now have more CDs in A - C then were previously in the entire collection. There is still a lot to do there, including adding more album covers and lyrics, and putting in direct links to let people buy the CDs, but hey, this is more than I have done in that section in 6 years! Go look at it and marvel.

Switching to GEMM

I've decided to give up on using Amazon's affliates program. It's too much work to create the links, and there isn't a good way to automate it.
Their selection doesn't reflect what's in my CD collection too well either. So I am switching over to GEMM, an online collective that I have shopped at many times. Basically it's a clearinghouse for all kinds of small new and used record shops around the world, so their selection of esoteric stuff is excellent. They also carry vinyl and oddities, so I think it's a much better fit. Just make sure you read the descriptions of items very carefully - I would hate for somebody without a turntable to buy a 12" single...

Traffic is up

Well, still struggling to find time to update things. My initial mistake of admitting I didn't have enough to keep me busy has snowballed into a huge amount of work. Hense, the lack of the updating. I have however, had time to look at the site logs, and something interesting has shown up. Traffic is way up since I started claiming I would update. Over 1000 visitors so far in January alone.

Many of these people seem to come here from search engines, and I have noticed that some of them - usually searching on 80s related topics - actually look through quite a bit of the site. If you are one of these people, please do me a favor and leave a comment - let me know what you think. I thrive on your praise. Also, if you are someone I know, or who knows me, please, please, please drop me a leave a comment and let me know you were here! For example, someone recently did a google search on Au Coquelet and then looked at 26 pages on the site - who would do a thing like that? I'm dying to know.

The next updating I do is going to be the purchase links - I noticed that a whole bunch of people are looking to buy weird old eighties stuff, and landing on my site. I will probably also add some resources for out of print and hard to find stuff. I'm also going be be adding lyrics and album cover graphics where possible.

I'm also considering dropping all the Shinra.com pages at the front of the site. It's an old joke, and I'm tired of it. If you object, let me know. Too late. I did it.

God Dammit!

Still trying to find time for updating. I made the mistake of telling my boss that I didn't have enough to do at work, garnering me many, many brownie points, and, of course, tons of new work. This, plus on-going bouts of existential nausea have cut into the time I can spend updating. On top of all this, I find out that CD-Now has been acquired by Amazon, and I have to go and update all my links if I want to continue recieving filthy lucre. I know what I will be doing over the holidays...

I'm going to fix this place up

I've decided that I don't do enough with this site. So, I am now going to start updating it more frequently, and adding new sections and stuff. We will see how long this lasts. In the meantime, expect to see lots of formatting errors and stuff while I update. This site was originally created back in, like, 1995, and completely hand-coded using something like notepad, so I am going to try and go through and update everything using modern tools and stuff. It will be screwed up in the meantime.
